I don't care that he was just a finalist to play James Bond.

But I care to take note that it took more than 7 years for his first critically-acclaimed role, Somersault, to finish. I also care and is quite interested to take a closer look at his new projects: from "Avatar", "Terminator Salvation" and "Clash of the Titans" to "The Tourist" and "The Candidate". I also care and is quite interested in reading what he's up to:

I also care that the public are getting their 12 dollars' worth when they go to a movie, and that they're not coming out not wanting to ever see a movie with me in it again. I don't care what people think of me as a person, but I do care what people think of my work, and whether I'm investing enough into it.

That's Sam Worthington talking, of course.

In perspective, is he the guy whose going to continue the tradition set by his fellow Aussie actors - including Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Hugh Jackman and many others?

If you're going to ask that question to an Aussie, then the answer might be a big yes! But even moviegoers from the Philippines seem to admire the guy.

Says the Philippine Star in their profile of the actor:

Pretty soon, the virtually unknown Australian actor Sam Worthington will be catapulted to global stardom as he joins Christian Bale in Columbia Pictures’ futuristic action-adventure Terminator Salvation. The filmmakers hired Worthington, fresh off his experience working with Terminator creator James Cameron on his upcoming film Avatar.

In 2000, Worthington made his feature film debut with a starring role in the Australian film Bootmen, in the role of Adam Garcia's brooding older brother. His performance garnered him an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

However, it was his layered performance in Cate Shortland's critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2004 film Somersault that brought Worthington international attention. He won an AFI Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and in addition, the film made a clean sweep of the year's AFI Awards, winning in all 13 film categories-a first in the awards' history. Says the actor when asked about his background before acting...

I was a brick layer. I built houses and never wanted to act. When I was 19, I met a young girl who auditioned for the premier drama school. I auditioned with her for moral support, to cheer her along. I got in and she didn't, and she dumped me a week later. We weren't seeing eye to eye. I didn't know what wings on the stage were. I thought Chekov was on the Starship Enterprise. I didn't realize he wrote plays. So, I was a sponge that took everything in. And then, you finish your sentence after three years and they release you for good behavior, if you're lucky, and you go and work, and you learn how to act. I'm still an infant in this, but it's been 10 years. I've always thought that you do as much as you can, in your own country, so you can sit in a room with Jim Cameron or McG and offer something. That's my apprenticeship. You don't build a house and then go, "Hey, can I do the Twin Towers project?" No one's going to give you the job. So, my belief is that you do as much as you can, and I looked at other actors in Australia who have done the same thing. [ read more ]
